AOSIS reflection on 2019
African Online Scientific Information Systems (Pty) Ltd (AOSIS) wishes to thank the scholars, professionals, editors, and readers who have contributed to a remarkably successful 2019. AOSIS recorded significant accomplishments in its three major areas of operation: publishing, professional development for healthcare professionals, and online learning.
Publishing
AOSIS Publishing produced nine books in 2019, on topics ranging from botany to the future of education. It added seven scholarly journals to its collection in 2019:
- South African Family Practice
- The Southern African Journal of Infectious Diseases
- Theologia Viatorum
- The African Journal of Career Development
- The African Journal of Psychological Assessment
- The Journal of African Foresight
AOSIS assumed full ownership of an eighth journal, HTS Teologiese Studies / Theological Studies, after serving for years as its publisher.
All AOSIS books and journals are published under open-access licenses, making them freely available for non-commercial use.
This year’s success builds on 2018’s, which AOSIS celebrated by sponsoring the annual Laureatus Awards on 10-11 April. The gathering’s first day showcased new monographs and journals and awarded special recognition to exceptional scholarship. Its second day was devoted to a symposium on Prof. Johann W.N. Tempelhoff’s ground-breaking book South Africa’s water governance hydraulic mission (1912-2008) in a WEF nexus context.
Professional Development
AOSIS’s Electronic Continuing Professional Development (eCPD) platform continues to deliver the knowledge and training healthcare professionals need to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.
In 2019, eCPD delivered 44,909 continuing-education units to 965 healthcare professionals, further advancing its role in supporting high-quality medical services across South Africa. In 2019 alone, eCPD added 156 new activities to its offerings, and developed a suite of Premium CPD Partner Courses which will debut in early 2020.
eLearning
AOSIS expanded its eLearning content-creation capabilities to include direct partnerships with client schools and teachers. The result is a complete set of affordable, sustainable courseware appropriate for use in the classroom, online, or in blended curricula. In 2019, AOSIS ventured for the first time into virtual reality, content creation.
Like many schools, AOSIS publishes its courseware on Moodle, a popular, mature, open-source eLearning platform. AOSIS was a prominent participant in flagship conferences including the first MoodleMoot Global, held in Barcelona, and MoodleMoot Africa and eLearning Africa, both held in Côte d’Ivoire. AOSIS now offers Moodle Educator Certification training for advanced Moodle administrators, along with its popular three-hour introduction to Moodle for prospective users.
In each of these areas, AOSIS strove in 2019 to publish vital knowledge on terms that make it accessible to all. Its success bodes well for continued growth in 2020.
