AOSIS eLearning – Managing Moodle upgrades: Customisations and installed plugins
For most people, a standard Moodle installation is sufficient, as is it “out of the box”. However, in some instances, an extra feature is required. You can either install a plugin from the Moodle plugins directory (a 3rd party plugin), a developer can make core code changes, or a developer can code a new plugin for your site, all of which should be completed by a Certified Moodle Partner.
When code changes are made to the site, it is best practice to keep a technical information document detailing any changes made, which will help when you upgrade the main site and test the site. The same principle applies for plugins.
For 3rd party plugins, check the Moodle plugin directory to see if the developer has updated the plugin for newer versions. If not, you will need to develop a new plugin or check if there are other plugins that have the same or similar functionality.
