Towards Evidence Informed Action in Promoting Disability Inclusion in Africa
African Network for Evidence to Action in Disability (AFRINEAD) is a pan-African network founded by the Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies at Stellenbosch University in 2007. The network promotes, facilitates, and coordinates implementation of disability research evidence into policy and practice. The 7th AFRINEAD Conference took place in Cape Town from 29 November to 3 December 2023, bringing together researchers, activists and practitioners from across the continent and further afield. The conference proceedings were organised around eight thematic areas drawn from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), yielding discussions on various concerns including education, economic empowerment, holistic wellbeing, assistive technology, among others. The many disability-related research interests and disciplinary approaches represented at this conference evidences the interdisciplinary and intersectoral significance of disability research, and disability studies itself, in Africa. In the spirit of AFRINEAD’s commitment to translating evidence to action in disability, we invite authors who presented at the 7th AfriNEAD Conference to develop their papers for publication in this special issue of the AJOD, particularly those with strong recommendations towards promoting disability inclusion and participation.

- To contribute to a growing body of evidence on the circumstances and needs of people with disabilities in various African contexts.
- To provide recommendations towards greater disability inclusion and participation in Africa.
