The South African biblical studies landscape is characterised by a plethora of traditions, analytic methods, and hermeneutical approaches designed to address the range of societal challenges that South Africans and Christians face. This diversity in approach enables a more comprehensive Christian response to doctrinal, ethical, and social questions such as gender and sexuality, land reform, socio-economic, and political issues. Yet, such diversity also causes confusion and tension within both scholarly and ecclesiastical circles, leading to a great deal of contestation about hermeneutical points of departure.

This book. Christian hermeneutics in South Africa, explores the rapidly changing environment of biblical hermeneutics in South Africa through a collection of essays by experts in the field. Hermeneutical approaches addressed and explicated range from the traditional approaches of Reformed and Pentecostal theology to the more recent developments of black theology, the hermeneutics of suspicion, New Hermeneutics, and eco-feminism. The theological premises, theoretical considerations and different nuances within the various traditions are explained and practical examples are provided of how these traditions employ texts in addressing ethical questions. This publication provides a framework for engagement for biblical scholars and ethicists and believers interested in how we interpret Scripture alike.
