Title: Interrogating Coloniality in South African Primary Schools
Deadline for submissions: 31 January 2024
Introduction
The South African Journal of Childhood Education (SAJCE) welcomes the submission of original manuscripts, empirical or theoretical, on the theme of Interrogating Coloniality in South African Primary Schools.
Objective
Coloniality, the remnants of colonialism, has shaped our institutions including our teaching and learning practices. Its resilience, persistence, and multiple permutations have resulted in poor schooling experiences, particularly for primary school children who still have to contend with outdated pedagogies with un – or under-qualified teachers, poor learning contexts, limited resources, and limited consideration for their psycho-social well-being.
Discussions about decolonisation and decoloniality are often associated with higher education. However, higher education does not operate in a vacuum. The inequalities that are vocalised at HEI’s in South Africa and elsewhere are structural and epistemic challenges that are rooted in primary education. Education is a continuum, and as such it is also crucial to understand and investigate the tensions that exist within primary schooling to realise whole system transformation. The burden of race, gender and coloniality still falls heavily on our children and, almost 30 years after ushering in a new democracy, it is important to take stock, of where we have come from and where we are heading. If the PIRLS results are anything to go by, the quality of educational experiences in primary schools is cause for concern and as such remains topical and important. This issue contributes to debates that seek to decolonize education in South Africa and aims to receive contributions that highlight primary schools as liminal spaces in the context of coloniality.
