New Contree joins the AOSIS scholarly journal collection.
AOSIS is proud to announce the launch of New Contree, the latest journal to join our growing open access scholarly publications. Make sure to visit the journals brand new online platform at newcontree.org.za.
When the journal was originally established in January 1977, it was known as Contree, with a focus on urban and regional histories. After 1994 the name changed and the scope extended to instil and disseminate specific and inclusive, comparative local and regional history debate in Africa in social contexts, and its value in broader transnational contexts.
Focus and Scope
New Contree serves as a scholarly voice and platform for instilling and disseminating specific and comparative local and regional history debate in Africa and its value in broader (transnational contexts). New Contree’s intellectual repertoire compliments a rigorous theoretically reflexive social history in which inclusivity in reconstructing the past from ‘below’ (ordinary people’s voice, and acknowledging smaller community activities) and also from ‘above’ (be informed on related actions, for example, central authority, government and national figures) matters. How to submit your manuscript
To contribute your latest research findings towards this publication, please visit newcontree.org.za and submit your manuscripts online. Please refer to the submission procedure when submitting your original manuscripts. The submission guidelines include information about the types of articles received for publication and preparing a manuscript for submission.

Publication frequency
The journal publishes one volume each year. Articles are published online when ready for publication and then printed in an end-of-year compilation. Additional collections may be published for special events (e.g. conferences) and when special themes are addressed.

Peer-review Policy
The journal has a double-blinded peer review process. Manuscripts that fit the scope of the journal and that is of high quality are initially examined by editorial staff and are sent by the Editor-in-Chief to two independent, expert reviewers. Read our full peer review process.
