Insider Tips: Getting your article published in an open access journal
Discover insider tips on getting your article published in an open-access scholarly journal by watching the recording of a recent webinar featuring experts in the field of open access publishing. The webinar was hosted by Dr. Deidré Pretorius (University of the Witwatersrand), section editor of Sexual Health of African Journal of Primary Health Care & Family Medicine (PHCFM), along with guests Prof Ian Couper (Stellenbosch University) and Dr Motlatso Mlambo (University of South Africa).
Dr Pretorius has been involved in Academics since 2001, initially part-time while in private practice and later full-time. For the past 10 years, she has been affiliated with the University of Witwatersrand Division of Family Medicine. She is a member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) and Southern Africa Sexual Health Association (SASHA), as well as a working group member of the European Sexual Medicine Network (ESMN) committee to promote sexual medicine training in medical schools globally. Besides sexual medicine, she also has a passion for medical communication and counseling.
Prof Couper has been the Director of Ukwanda Centre for Rural Health, and Professor of Rural Health, Department of Global Health, Stellenbosch University (SU) since 2016, following nearly fourteen years at Wits and the North West Provincial Department of Health. He has held visiting appointments at Monash and Flinders Universities in Australia and the University of Washington, USA. He is a visiting professor at Wits, and an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Adelaide University, Australia. He is the African section editor of Rural and Remote Health and an associate editor for BMC Medical Education, and an active member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
Dr Motlatso Mlambo currently serves as the Director of Institutional Research in the Department of Institutional Intelligence at the University of South Africa. She holds a Ph.D. (Interdisciplinary: Speech-Language Pathology and Linguistics) from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is an honorary Senior Researcher in the School of Clinical Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, University of the Witwatersrand, and she has served as a Senior Researcher, Chief Researcher, and Research Manager in various higher education institutions in South Africa, including a Research Council. She has supervised both Masters and Ph.D. students to completion. She has over 20 years of research management experience focusing on multi/ inter/ and transdisciplinary research, including educational research, public health research, and institutional research. She is a member of various institutional committees such as the Senate Research Committee, teaching and learning committee, student support committee, and university quality assurance committee. She is also a member of professional bodies such as the Southern African Association for Institutional Research. She was a Reviewer for the Rural Health and Maternal and Child Health journals. She authored and co-authored over 40 publications in accredited international and local journals.
