AI and ethics: AOSIS supports Peer Review Week 2023
As an open-access publisher of scholarly journals and books, AOSIS proudly supports Peer Review Week 2023, celebrated between 25-29 September, and is dedicated to the theme ‘Peer Review and The Future of Publishing’. We are pleased to contribute to this global event that emphasises the central role of peer review in maintaining scientific quality.
In line with this year’s theme, we’re bringing into focus a topic that’s been reshaping the publishing landscape: the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT. As these technologies evolve, they present opportunities and challenges, especially in the context of peer review.
AI tools are transforming the way we create, distribute, and evaluate scholarly work. They can help streamline the peer-review process, making it more efficient and potentially reducing bias. However, it’s essential to consider ethical implications as we integrate these tools into our workflows.
According to the Harvard Gazette, privacy and surveillance, bias and discrimination, and transparency are some of the most pressing ethical issues surrounding AI and its use. In healthcare, for example, informed consent for data use and safety are key concerns, among others, according to an article published in Frontiers in Surgery. These considerations become all the more relevant when AI is used in peer review, an inherently sensitive process requiring fairness.
At AOSIS, we believe in responsible AI use. We’re committed to addressing these ethical considerations head-on, ensuring transparency, and upholding the highest standards of integrity in our publishing processes.
In collaboration with experienced editors, AOSIS is finalising our AI Policy, which will provide further insights into our approach to responsibly integrating AI into our work. Keep an eye on our legal centre for the upcoming release of our AI Policy.
