A historical narrative series by JCMSA
Exploring the evolution of medical and dental specialities: A historical narrative series by JCMSA
Gain a snapshot perspective on how your own speciality and other specialities have evolved over time.
JCMSA has taken the step of documenting the evolution and growth of medical and dental specialities in South Africa through an exciting series of editorials. These historical narratives provide valuable insights into the development, challenges, and successes that have shaped various medical specialities.
Preserving the legacy of a specialist discipline’s trajectory, through highlighting pivotal moments, pioneers, and challenges faced and overcome, can give us all, especially young specialists and registrars, a greater appreciation of the decades of perseverance and innovation, and the importance of collaborative efforts – for example, through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) – in advancing specialist medicine.
Internal medicine, family medicine and anaesthesia are the first three specialities covered in this series.
Read the first three editorials in the series:
- Internal medicine in South Africa: A historical and contemporary overview
- Family medicine as a discipline in South Africa: Historical perspectives
- A brief history of anaesthesia in South Africa
Look out for the next editorials in the series!
