Conference Edition: Mindful Organizations, Productive People, Cultivating a Culture of Mental Health
The special collection dubbed as the conference edition of the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) 2024 Annual Conference recognises the critical issues of mental health. Through the special collection (and conference deliberations) we aim to bring together psychologists, psychometrists, human resource practitioners, mental health advocacy organisations, and business leaders to collaboratively explore and devise effective strategies to ensure psychological well-being and productivity of the workforce.
Objective:
In this special collection, we call for impact-driven psychology of work research with a focus on the theme of a special collection titled – Conference Edition: Mindful Organizations, Productive People, Cultivating a Culture of Mental Health. We solicit papers that leverage research methods, theory, practice interventions and policy directions around the proposed theme of the special collection.
Recommended Topics:
Topics of Interest (not exhaustive): Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following three themes: “context,” “content,” and “conduct.”
For Theme 1, we have chosen to focus on the importance of context in understanding workplace mental health. We seek papers that will help grasp the overall landscape in relation to the theme of the special collection. This includes papers that focus on the root causes of mental health in the workplace, the extent of the mental health crisis, and debunk common myths. We also welcome papers that cover trends and strategies for managing mental health in the workplace. Authors can also consolidate understanding around mental health research through systematic literature reviews or bibliometric analysis. We also welcome research covering various contexts of work where the focus is dedicated to the work psychology context.
For Theme 2, we focus on the multiple touchpoints, coping mechanisms, and collaborative solutions involved in workplace mental health and wellbeing, emphasising that it is an ubiquitous issue. We welcome best practice and case studies related to mental health issues striving for rigor in how these are presented to edify the theory, policy, and practitioner audience. Further we also welcome papers that explore predecessors (enablers or drivers) of mental health within the workplace.
For Theme 3, we concentrate on the concept of “conduct” and adopt a futuristic approach to addressing mental health issues in the workplace. The theme will delve into various ways to achieve sustainable development in mental health by involving multiple perspectives and approaches. We welcome papers that validate scales related to mental health issues offering insights related to improving psychometric properties (including having a pool of localized scales to enhance mental health research in organisations).
