HTS Theological Studies 2026 special collection. Is Zionism Biblical? Pentecostal Perspectives on the Israel–Palestine Question
As a rapidly expanding transnational religious movement, Pentecostalism has significantly shaped popular theological interpretations of Zionism, biblical prophecy, and the political legitimacy of the State of Israel. Nevertheless, the theological, historical, and geopolitical dimensions of this alignment remain underexamined and hotly contested.
This special collection seeks to interrogate the theological assumptions, eschatological narratives, and political solidarities that underpin Pentecostal engagements with global Christian Zionism and the Israel–Palestine question. Contributors are invited to examine how Pentecostal traditions—across diverse regional and cultural contexts—interpret the biblical foundations of Zionism, relate to the contemporary Israeli state, and respond to Palestinian suffering, resistance, and nationhood.
We welcome interdisciplinary contributions that are critically engaged yet non-polemical to examine the intersections of scripture, theology, nationalism, and geopolitics within Pentecostal thought and practice. Submissions may draw on biblical studies, political/public theology, missiology, anthropology, philosophy, history, international relations, or decolonial and postcolonial theory to interrogate the theological foundations and political implications of Pentecostal Zionism in relation to the Israel–Palestine question.
Recommended topics:
- How have Pentecostal interpretations of the Bible and prosperity theological hermeneutics shaped support for or opposition to global Christian Zionist assumptions?
- In what ways do Pentecostal eschatologies influence political attitudes toward Israel and Palestine?
- How do Pentecostal communities in the Global South, particularly in Africa, Latin America, or Asia, engage with the Israel-Palestine conflict?
- What theological or ethical frameworks exist within Pentecostal traditions to critique or resist Christian Zionism?
- How do Palestinian Pentecostal voices complicate dominant narratives within global Pentecostalism?
- What role do spiritual warfare, prophecy, and dispensationalism play in Pentecostal views of the Middle East?
- How have Pentecostal institutions or leaders participated in diplomatic, humanitarian, or advocacy work related to Israel and Palestine?
- Can Pentecostalism offer resources for peace, reconciliation, or decolonial engagement in the context of the Israel–Palestine conflict?
