Fifty years of theological and religion research: The history of the Research Institute for Theology and Religion at the University of South Africa (1975-2025)
The Institute for Theological Research was established in 1975 at the University of South Africa under the leadership of Professor Willem Vorster. In 1995 the name was changed to the Research Institute for Theology and Religion after Professor Cornel du Toit took over as Head. During the past 50 years the Institute (ITR/RITR) has held annual conferences, managed national and international projects and published a vast amount of academic books and articles. It also housed the CBPowell Bible Centre which focused on the popularization of theology.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the RITR in 2025, a special issue of Verbum et Ecclesia will be dedicated to the history of theological and religion research the past 50 years in South Africa, with a focus on the RITR.
We hereby invite you to submit an article on one of the following sub-themes for consideration for possible publication:
- Any topic on the history of theological and religion research in South Africa the past 50 years
- An evaluation of the work of Professor Willem Vorster
- An evaluation of the work of Professor Cornel du Toit
- Any part of the history of the ITR/RITR
- The history of the CB Powell Bible Centre
Note that Verbum et Ecclesia is an accredited journal with the Department of Higher Education and Training of South Africa, listed on the following approved indexing services:

The due date for submissions is 30 September 2024, for publication early 2025.

A special issue of Verbum et Ecclesia will be dedicated to the history of theological and religion research the past 50 years in South Africa.
Manuscript information:
Manuscript contributions may consist of the following:
- Manuscript submissions should be in English.
- Original Research articles must fully comply with the Verbum et Ecclesia journal guidelines for manuscripts (maximum <7000> words, 60 or fewer references with limited self-referencing; no more than 7 tables/Figures).
Interested authors must consult the journal’s guidelines for manuscript submissions at verbumetecclesia.org.za.
Submission procedure
To submit your article to the Verbum ET Ecclesia, go to verbumetecclesia.org.za. When you submit the article, select the special issue “Fifty years of theological and religion research: The history of the Research Institute for Theology and Religion at the University of South Africa (1975-2025)” as the article type. The submission portal will be accessible on verbumetecclesia.org.za after login in with your personal user credentials. For more details on the submission procedure go to submission procedure. All submissions will undergo anonymous review to guarantee high scientific quality and relevance to the subject. The final decision regarding acceptance/revision/rejection will be based on the reviews received from the reviewers and at the sole discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.
