Reading & Writing 2026 special collection. Advancing Literacy through Teacher Education: Insights from the PrimTEd Language and Literacy Initiative
The Primary Teacher Education (PrimTEd) Project, a national initiative, aims to play a pivotal role in strengthening the quality of teacher education in South Africa. The Language and Literacy Assessments of PrimTEd focuses on developing, designing diagnostic and performance assessments, using lecturer-agreed-upon standards for pre-service teacher competence in Languages and Mathematics. The assessments focus on knowledge and practice for foundation and intermediate language and mathematics student teachers. By using a collaborative approach, the PrimTEd project aims to increase teacher agency through reflective practice for teaching, using valid evidence from the assessment. The reflection is likely to result in a lecturer consensus on what constitutes an effective curriculum for mathematics and languages in the Bachelor of Education foundation and intermediate languages and mathematics courses.
