AOSIS is an information technology company founded in 1999 to address the need for online services to support continuing professional development (CPD) for the health professions. This service, offered on www.ecpd.co.za, currently supports more than 17,000 health professionals.

Developing online systems for CPD resulted in expertise developing and supporting e-learning systems, which was backed up by extensive experience in e-learning from the academic sector. AOSIS specialised in the installation, development and support of the world-renowned open source Moodle® e-learning management system, and became an official Moodle Partner® in 2006. AOSIS is the first South African and even African company to achieve this. AOSIS provides e-learning platforms and services to leading South African companies and educational providers through its Ituta service.

In 2005 AOSIS was instrumental in setting up the first online manuscript management and publishing system for a South African scholarly journal, South African Family Practice, based on the open source Open Journal Systems. Since then, AOSIS supported a number of leading South African journals to follow suit and has developed a fully-fledged online publishing service for scholarly journals, OpenJournals.
